México contra Estados Unidos,otra vez

By/Por: Juan Pablo Sabines

Mexico against the USA, once again

You could argue that Martino’s era with the Mexican National Team began its decline in
the summer of 2021, when they lost the Nations League final against their northern
rival. That game in Denver, won by a very young Stars and Stripes team in overtime,
still hurts south of the border because it meant the first of 3 straight losses against the
archenemy.
Almost two years later, the CONCACAF giants will meet again, this time in the
semifinals, next June in Vegas. But both have had drama to spare so far this year.
Mexican toxicity
The Tri fan seems to be happy only when he’s angry. The level of toxicity is so high that
the media detect it, take advantage of it and add fuel to the fire, and everything
becomes a vicious cicle. Mexico tied against Jamaica at the Azteca with three shots on
the post, an uncalled penalty, a very clear mistake by Chucky, and thanks to a dubious
own goal that came after a push.
However, everyone pulled their hair out and didn’t stop booing those in green, mainly
Ochoa, Sánchez, Edson, Lainez and Raúl Jiménez, all of whom coincidentally used to
play in that stadium for América.
I’m not saying we should satisfied with the result or that we’re not still hurt by the
elimination in Qatar, because neither am I, but the anger is already exaggerated for a
team that’s just beginning a new stage, being the first game of the A team in the Diego
Cocca era.
Berhalter’s soap opera
But Team USA hasn’t been without drama either. Since the World Cup ended, it
remains unknown if Greg Berhalter’s going to continue as the Americans coach or not.
In the process, it suddenly became known that Berhalter had allegedly beaten his wife,
by then his girlfriend, over 30 years ago.
The curious thing about the matter is that it was the coach himself who released the
news with his respective apology, anticipating that Claudio Reyna, his former
teammate and father of Gio, a current USMNT and Borussia Dortmund player, would
give him away.
Apparently Gio was hurt by how Greg treated him in Qatar, and almost returned him on
a plane, but Berhalter defended himself by saying that the player was the one who
didn’t want to train and his attitude was not correct. Between leaving and staying, at
the moment it’s Anthony Hudson, half American half English, who was left as interim
while the investigation for gender violence against Greg Berhalter is resolved.
However, his era has been bittersweet, beating Granada 7-1 but then they could barely
beat El Salvador, right in Orlando. They advanced with many doubts, and we still don’t
know who’ll be on the bench for the zone’s classic on June 15.
The other semifinal will be the same day between Panama and Canada, but all eyes
will be on Mexico and the United States.
