Scholarship aims to empower Central Florida black entrepreneurs and aspiring business owners to build thriving enterprises that transform lives

Kissimmee, FL – Two Central Florida executives have teamed together to pay it forward to the next generation of local Black leaders. Tanisha Nunn-Gary, President of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida (AACCCF) and Dr. James Michael Burkett, President of Florida Technical College (FTC) have joined forces to award the Business Opportunity Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship valued at up to $61,178, to a local Black leader who is currently building or who aspires to build a new business. Entrepreneurs are required to submit applications at www.ftccollege.edu/aacccf-scholarship/ by Monday, February 12.

“Talent is evenly distributed, but resources, unfortunately are not,” stated Dr. James Michael Burkett, President of Florida Technical College. “This scholarship was created to help eliminate economic barriers that limit these entrepreneurs to fulfill their ambitions.”

The scholarship covers the tuition and fees for an FTC Bachelor’s Degree in Business Entrepreneurship, Management, and Marketing, aiming to empower the recipient with essential skills for success in the competitive business environment.  In addition to the Bachelor program – to be offered fully online – the selected recipient will receive a laptop computer and an exclusive pass to attend the annual AACCCF Empowerment Business Summit while completing his degree.

“We invite aspiring and established Central Florida Black leaders to seize this opportunity and join us in rewriting the narrative and shaping a brighter future,” said Tanisha Nunn-Gary, President of AACCCF.

This is the second full-tuition scholarship the organizations award since FTC became a trustee of the African American Chamber of Commerce in 2020. Eddy Duran, the recipient of the first scholarship, will graduate with honors in 2024.  During the academic journey of the Dominican entrepreneur, which started in 2021, Eddy launched ArtCycle Kids, a program that uses cycling to teach children teamwork.
