Tal vez las franquicias de los Nuggets y el Heat no sean las más populares o mediáticas, pero sin duda tienen muchas historias que contar en estas Finales de la NBA 2023.
Nikola Jokic: su lugar en la historia
El 2 veces MVP de la liga siempre ha sido criticado por quedarse corto en playoffs. Con él, Denver solo había llegado una vez a las finales del Oeste, y había sido barrido un par de veces desde entonces. Esta postemporada todo ha cambiado. El serbio, de por sí un jugador casi imparable a la ofensiva, se ha convertido en un excelente defensor, además de aportarle 9 triples dobles (hasta ahora) a su equipo esta postemporada, ya una marca histórica. Un título cambiaría por completo la narrativa sobre el “Joker”, dejando atrás a aquellos buenos jugadores sin anillo y entrando en la conversación como un top-20 histórico, tal como lo hizo Giannis 2 años atrás.
El pequeño Butler que pudo
Del otro lado, si el Miami Heat gana su cuarto trofeo Larry O’Brien, la historia deberá decidir en qué lugar pone esta postemporada de Butler. Miami no fue ni cerca el equipo más talentoso del Este, y de hecho casi la mitad de la plantilla no fue drafteada (siete jugadores, entre ellos Robinson, Martin, Strus y Vincent). Jimmy Butler no es el mejor jugador de la liga, pero sí es, sin lugar a dudas, quien más sube su nivel en el momento importante. Ya había traído un viaje a las Finales a Miami, en aquella burbuja de Orlando en 2020, pero un título lo pondría en el podio de aquellos que lo ganaron todo casi “sin ayuda”.
Jamal Murray y su argumento al estrellato
Cuando pensamos en los Denver Nuggets, pensamos en Jokic. Más cuando Murray pasó lesionado un par de temporadas y no pudo ayudarlos a llegar lejos. En estos playoffs, el canadiense está tomando un papel muy distinto: el de protagonista. Es líder de puntos en esta postemporada, y ha sido clave en cada serie ganada por Denver, en las cuales no han sudado mucho: ante Timberwolves, Suns y Lakers. A Murray no se le considera entre los 10 mejores de la liga, ni entre los 15 realmente, pero si sigue jugando así, anotando más de 30 por noche, y consigue su primer anillo, la historia cambiará por completo.
Sin Lakers ni Celtics
Casi todo el mundo hubiera querido unas Finales entre las dos franquicias más ganadoras, con estrellas como LeBron, AD y Tatum en el escenario. Pero estas Finales, si bien no son las más llamativas, siguen superando el rating de las de 2020 y 2021. Al aficionado al basquetbol, más que ver un juego de alto nivel, le atraen las narrativas, las estrellas, las franquicias históricas, y no encontrará tanto en estas Finales entre el sembrado 8 del Este y un equipo debutante en esta instancia. Pero ello no significa que no sean unas Finales de altísimo nivel, entre dos grandes equipos que merecen estar aquí. ¿Quién se llevará todo, Miami o Denver?

He had already brought a trip to the Finals to Miami, in that Orlando bubble in 2020, but a title would put him on the podium of those who won it all almost “singlehanded.”
Jamal Murray and his storyline to stardom
When we think of the Denver Nuggets, we think of Jokic. Even more when Murray spent a couple of seasons injured and couldn’t help them get far. In these playoffs, the Canadian is taking a very different role: the protagonist. He’s the points leader this postseason, and he’s been key in every series Denver has won, in which they haven’t sweated much: against the Timberwolves, Suns and Lakers. Murray isn’t considered to be in the league’s top 10, or top 15 really, but if he keeps playing like this, scoring 30+ a night, and gets himself his first ring, the story will change completely.
No Lakers, no Celtics
Almost everyone would have wanted a Finals between the two winningest franchises, with stars like LeBron, AD and Tatum on the stage. But these Finals, although they’re not the most striking, continue to exceed the rating of those of 2020 and 2021. The basketball fan, more than seeing a high-level game, is attracted to the narratives, the stars, the historic franchises, and he will not find so much in these Finals between the 8th seed from the East and a debutant team in this instance. But this doesn’t mean that it’s not a high level Finals, between two great teams that deserve to be here. Who will take it all, Miami or Denver?
