Nine Harmony High School students arrested after assaulting another student
Osceola County, FL – On October 16, 2026, the victim—a 17-year-old—was in the Harmony High School cafeteria with his girlfriend during lunch when they observed another student being harassed (carrots were being thrown at her). The victim asked those responsible to stop throwing food at the girl. Two of the individuals involved exchanged words with the victim and his girlfriend; the 17-year-old then attempted to de-escalate the situation by walking away with his partner.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. that same day, deputies from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) responded to reports of a physical altercation that took place off school grounds, in the exit tunnel near Harmony High School. As he was heading toward his vehicle, the victim was struck by 16-year-old Joandiel Gómez Ruiz. Eight other suspects—ranging in age from 14 to 18—joined the assault, repeatedly punching the victim in the face and head, leaving him injured and bleeding.
The victim was taken to the hospital by his mother and received 11 stitches to close wounds on his face. A video of the incident, captured on a cell phone, was provided to the deputies and helped identify everyone involved. On October 21, OCSO deputies arrived at Harmony High School and, working in coordination with school staff, arrested the nine male students who participated in the offense. All nine were charged with the felonies of aggravated assault and inciting a riot. The two 18-year-olds were booked into the Osceola County Jail, while the seven minors were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
“I want to be clear: physical intimidation, threats, or any act of violence will not be tolerated in our schools or in our community, whether on or off school grounds,” stated Dr. Mark Shanoff, Superintendent of the Osceola School District. “This type of behavior is fundamentally incompatible with our school district’s values and the standards of conduct we expect from every student. We take these matters very seriously, and there must be accountability when these expectations are not met. I appreciate the excellent collaboration we maintain with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies; their cooperation is essential to keeping our communities safe and ensuring that our students uphold the highest standards of respect, responsibility, and personal conduct.”
Sheriff Chris Blackmon wants this to serve as a message to all students attending public or private schools in Osceola County: “If you physically assault another student—whether on or off school grounds—deputies will arrest you.” He added, “The victim did the right thing by standing up for another student who was being bullied. He is the brave one; the nine teenagers who chose to use violence against him are the cowards.”
