En una carta Alexander N. Cartwright, presidente de la Universidad de Florida Central expresó: “El Dr. Hitt fue el cuarto presidente de UCF durante un excepcional mandato de 26 años, de 1992 a 2018. Remembering President Emeritus John C. Hitt
In a letter, Alexander N. Cartwright, President of University of Central Florida stated: “Dr. Hitt served as UCF’s fourth president for an exceptional 26-year tenure, from 1992 to 2018. He transformed UCF into a national leader in increasing access for students to earn a college degree and innovating through meaningful partnerships that touched our community, state, and many of the industries that call Central Florida home. His passing is a tremendous loss to our university, our community, and all of higher education.
Born in Texas, Dr. Hitt was the first in his family to attend college, and his love for football and teamwork began at Austin College, where he played as an offensive lineman. He strongly believed in the transformative power of education and was extremely proud of the 260,000 UCF degrees awarded during his tenure, with first-generation students earning nearly one in four of those degrees toward the end of his term as president.
Dr. Hitt’s legacy can be felt all over UCF’s campuses, including the John C. Hitt Library, the College of Medicine, the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, UCF Downtown, the Burnett Honors College, and DirectConnect to UCF.
Dr. Hitt was deeply devoted to his family — his wife, Martha, UCF’s beloved first lady, and their two children, two grandchildren, and great grandson, all of whom survive him. The Hitts described their time at UCF as “one of the greatest joys of our lives.”
We will always remember Dr. Hitt as a visionary leader, a champion of education, and a beloved member of the UCF community. Plans for a memorial service to honor Dr. Hitt’s life and legacy will be shared in the coming weeks”.
