Estamos a nada de que empiece la parte crucial del calendario en la NBA: las series a matar o morir. En cada conferencia hay un claro favorito, así como un puñado de contendientes esperando dar la sorpresa.
El Oeste
Honestamente, el enorme favorito deben ser los Denver Nuggets. Eso sí, los actuales campeones tienen una debilidad: con todo lo bueno que es Jokic (y es mejor de lo que muchos piensan), sin Jamal Murray este equipo tiende a caerse. Lo vimos hace un par de años en postemporada, lo hemos visto por momentos este año. Ahondando más en lo que comentábamos en la edición anterior, los demás equipos del Oeste se dividen entre los que son demasiado jóvenes y los demasiado veteranos. Algunos, como Minnesota, OKC o Nueva Orleans están dando pasos agigantados, comandados por una futura estrella (Anthony Edwards, SGA y Zion, respectivamente), pero podría decirse que su oportunidad está en el futuro más que en el presente. Irónicamente, equipos más veteranos que vienen abajo, como Lakers y Warriors (9 y 10 de la conferencia) pueden ser más peligrosos que los jóvenes que están en lo alto. Ambos han ganado títulos recientemente, y tienen a jugadores top 10 históricos (LeBron, Curry) buscando un quinto y último anillo, acompañados de futuros salón de la fama (Davies, Klay, Dray), quienes, si bien ya no pueden ser geniales noche tras noche, sí pueden ganarle a cualquiera y usar la experiencia a su favor. Están, también, los Clippers, Suns y Mavs, quienes no han lucido tan bien como esperábamos pero por su puro talento (Kawhi, PG13 y Harden; Durant, Booker y Beal; Doncic y Kyrie, respectivamente) no podemos descartarlos.
El Este
Los Celtics son como los Ravens de la NBA. Equipos que han ganado títulos, mas no recientemente, y quienes constantemente son excelentes en temporada regular, incluso siendo los mejores de sus ligas, pero quienes han fallado tantas veces en playoffs que ya no les creeremos hasta que tengan el trofeo en sus manos. Ah, y ambos tienen a una estrella de la liga que es más criticada que alabada (Lamar, Tatum). Boston ha dominado a placer y ya aseguró el mejor récord de la liga por mucho, pero hay algo (alguien) que no debe dejarlos dormir. Giannis y Milwaukee ha estado en piloto automático esta temporada regular, y aun así les alcanza para ser segundos y hasta vencer a los Celtics el martes pasado. Todos sabemos que, una vez lleguen los playoffs, los Bucks “prenderán un switch” y serán uno de los máximos contendientes. ¿Hasta dónde mejorarán, y será suficiente para eliminar a Celtics en unas eventuales finales? Hasta en unas semanas lo descubriremos. También, lo que este equipo perdió en defensa con la salida de Jrue Holiday (hoy en Boston) lo ganó en ofensiva con Damian Lillard, quien experimentará por primera vez ser el #2 de un equipo, así como formar parte de uno de los favoritos a campeón. Pocos tomarán en serio a los demás equipos, incluido el Magic, pero también seguimos esperando al Miami Heat de playoffs, tan peligrosos como nadie.
Playoffs-bound
We are just about to start the crucial part of the NBA calendar: the kill-or-be-killed series. In each conference there’s a clear favorite, as well as a handful of contenders hoping to spring an upset.
The West
Honestly, the huge favorite have to be the Denver Nuggets. Of course, the current champions have a weakness: as good as Jokic is (and he’s better than many think), without Jamal Murray this team tends to colapse. We saw it a couple of years ago in the postseason, we have seen it at times this year. Going deeper into what we mentioned in the previous edition, the other teams in the West are divided between those that are too young and those that are too old. Some, like Minnesota, OKC or New Orleans are taking leaps and bounds, led by a future star (Anthony Edwards, SGA and Zion, respectively), but it could be said that their opportunity is in the future rather than the present. Ironically, older teams at the bottom, like the Lakers and Warriors (9th and 10th in the conference) can be more dangerous than the youngsters at the top. Both have recently won titles, and have top 10 historical players (LeBron, Curry) looking for a fifth and final ring, accompanied by future hall of famers (Davies, Klay, Dray), who, while they may no longer be great night in night out, they can beat anyone and use the experience to their advantage. There are also the Clippers, Suns and Mavs, who haven’t looked as good as we expected but due to their pure talent (Kawhi, PG13 and Harden; Durant, Booker and Beal; Doncic and Kyrie, respectively) we can’t rule them out.
The East
The Celtics are like the Ravens of the NBA. Teams that have won titles, but not recently, and who are consistently excellent in the regular season, even atop their leagues, but who have failed so many times in the playoffs that we will no longer believe them until they have the trophy in their hands. Oh, and they both have a star who’s more criticized than praised (Lamar, Tatum). Boston has dominated at will and has already secured the best record in the league by far, but there’s something (someone) that should not let them sleep. Giannis and Milwaukee have been on autopilot this regular season, and they still have enough to finish second and even beat the Celtics last Tuesday. We all know that, once the playoffs arrive, the Bucks will “flip a switch” and be one of the top contenders. Up to where will they improve, and will it be enough to eliminate the Celtics in an eventual conference finals? We’ll find out in a few weeks. Also, what this team lost in defense with the departure of Jrue Holiday (today in Boston) it gained in offense with Damian Lillard, who will experience for the first time being the #2 of a team, as well as being part of one of the favorites to win it all. Few will take other teams seriously, including the Magic, but we’re also still waiting for the Playoffs version of the Miami Heat, as dangerous as anyone.
