Child accidentally shoots himself with unsecured handgun
Osceola County, FL – On April 10, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a three-and-a-half-year-old child discovered an unsecured handgun inside a residence located near Amber Way in Poinciana. 911 was called, and the first deputy to arrive at the scene provided life-saving medical aid until paramedics arrived. The child was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital, and his condition is currently reported as stable.
Detectives from Violent Crimes Unit are conducting a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the shooting and the circumstances surrounding it. The child’s family is cooperating with the detectives. We will our investigation and determine what charges, if any, will be filed.
So far in 2026, there have been 71 accidental shootings involving children in the United States, resulting in 24 deaths and 48 injuries.
We wish to remind firearm owners that, under state law, they have an obligation to store their weapons securely, keeping them out of the reach of minors. Section 790.001 states that anyone who stores or leaves a firearm within the reach of a minor commits a second-degree misdemeanor.
