Orlando, FL – La Agencia de Reurbanización Comunitaria (CRA por sus siglas en inglés) de la Ciudad de Orlando celebró una ceremonia de colocación de la primera piedra para conmemorar el inicio de la Fase I del proyecto Church Street Festival Street, marcando otro hito importante en la implementación del Plan de Acción del Centro de Orlando (DTO) y la redefinición del futuro del centro de Orlando.
El proyecto transformará Church Street, desde Garland Avenue hacia el este hasta Magnolia Avenue, en una vibrante calle de festivales que prioriza a las personas, mejora la experiencia peatonal y fortalece uno de los corredores más históricos y culturalmente significativos del centro de Orlando. Diseñado para apoyar eventos durante todo el año, restaurantes al aire libre, negocios locales y transporte multimodal, el proyecto refleja la visión de la comunidad de un centro más conectado, accesible y acogedor.
Guiado por el Plan de Acción del DTO, la reconstrucción ayudará a reducir el tráfico de paso, creando un paisaje urbano flexible que equilibra mejor el acceso, la circulación y los espacios de reunión pública. El proyecto reforzará el papel de Church Street como destino cívico y cultural para residentes, trabajadores y visitantes por igual.
El proyecto Church Street Festival Street se completará en tres fases:
- La Fase I (desde Garland Avenue hasta las vías del tren) reconstruirá el corredor para convertirlo en una excepcional calle para festivales, con dos carriles de circulación de 3,35 metros, una calzada sin bordillos que se conecta fluidamente con los espacios peatonales, una superficie semipermeable, zonas designadas para carga y descarga, y mayores oportunidades para el paisajismo. La construcción comenzará tras la ceremonia de colocación de la primera piedra y se prevé que finalice en el invierno de 2026.
- La Fase II (desde las vías del tren hasta Orange Avenue) da continuidad a la visión de la calle para festivales con un pavimento texturizado que extiende visualmente las aceras hacia la calzada para reducir la velocidad del tráfico, zonas designadas para carga y descarga, e incorpora bancos lineales, jardineras y mobiliario urbano que invitan a la gente a reunirse, disfrutar del entorno y del barrio. Se prevé que la construcción finalice en la primavera de 2028.
- La Fase III (de Orange Avenue a Magnolia Avenue) transformará el corredor de un solo sentido hacia el este a doble sentido, integrando el servicio de autobuses LYMMO a los carriles regulares y creando una red de transporte más intuitiva y conectada. Se prevé que la construcción finalice a principios del verano de 2028.
Al comenzar la construcción, se recomienda a conductores, peatones y visitantes del centro que planifiquen sus desplazamientos con anticipación y prevean tiempo adicional a medida que avancen las obras. Una vez finalizada, la transformada Church Street se convertirá en un espacio público vibrante que fomentará eventos comunitarios, celebrará Orlando y contribuirá a la construcción de un centro urbano más dinámico para las generaciones venideras.
Groundbreaking set for Church Street’s transformation into Festival Street
Orlando, FL – The City of Orlando’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of Phase I of the Church Street Festival Street project, marking another major milestone in implementing the Downtown Orlando (DTO) Action Plan and reimagining the future of downtown Orlando.
The project will transform Church Street from Garland Avenue east to Magnolia Avenue into a vibrant festival street that prioritizes people, enhances the pedestrian experience and strengthens one of downtown Orlando’s most historic and culturally significant corridors. Designed to support year-round events, outdoor dining, local businesses and multimodal travel, the project reflects the community’s vision for a more connected, accessible and welcoming downtown.
Guided by the DTO Action Plan, the reconstruction will help reduce cut-through traffic while creating a flexible streetscape that better balances access, movement and public gathering space. The project will reinforce Church Street’s role as a civic and cultural destination for residents, workers and visitors alike.
The Church Street Festival Street Project will be completed in three phases:
- Phase I (Garland Avenue to the Railroad Tracks) will reconstruct the corridor into an Exceptional Streetscapes Festival Street featuring two 11-foot travel lanes, a curbless roadway that seamlessly connects to pedestrian spaces, a semi-pervious street surface, designated loading and unloading areas, and expanded opportunities for landscaping. Construction begins following the groundbreaking ceremony and is anticipated to be complete in winter 2026.
- Phase II (Railroad Tracks to Orange Avenue) continues the Festival Street vision with textured paving that visually extends the sidewalks into the roadway to calm traffic, designated loading and unloading areas while incorporating linear benches, planters and movable furniture that encourage people to gather, linger and enjoy the district. Construction is anticipated to be complete in spring 2028.
- Phase III (Orange Avenue to Magnolia Avenue) will convert the corridor from one-way eastbound traffic to two-way operations while integrating LYMMO bus service into the regular travel lanes, creating a more intuitive and connected transportation network. Construction is anticipated to be complete in early summer 2028.
As construction begins, motorists, pedestrians and downtown visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and allow additional travel time as work progresses. Once complete, the transformed Church Street will serve as a vibrant public space that supports community events, celebrates Orlando and continues building a more dynamic downtown for generations to come.
