Orlando, FL – La educación ha sido el vehículo utilizado por Omar Berrío para trazarse una vida mejor. Recientemente, y después de una carrera de 25 años en la uniformada, el ahora Teniente del Departamento de Policía de Kissimmee, Omar Berrío, tuvo la oportunidad de obtener su diploma de bachilerato en Justicia Criminal de Florida Technical College.
En el 2018 el Teniente Berrio recibió la beca “Sargento Sam Howard y Oficial Matthew Baxter” creada por Florida Technical College en honor a los dos oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Kissimmee que perdieron la vida en el cumplimiento del deber en el 2017.
“Tener la oportunidad de honrarlos ha sido lo más importante para mí,” dijo Berrio. “Haberlos conocido de manera personal y profesionalmente me dió la oportunidad de honrar su legado.”
Su deseo de honrarlos fue evidente en los resultados obtenidos, Omar Berrío se graduó Summa Cum Laude con un GPA de 3.95.
Berrio también le da crédito a sus profesores en Florida Technical College por ayudarlo a navegar el proceso de educación superior para alcanzar sus metas educativas.
Asistir a Florida Technical College ayudó a Berrio a ser ascendido a teniente. Uno de los requisitos para el puesto de teniente es contar con un grado asociado o 60 créditos universitarios, que Berrío pudo completar en el 2021.
“Desde que recibió la beca, Omar Berrío fue ascendido a teniente y continuó protegiendo y sirviendo a los ciudadanos de Kissimmee con el más alto nivel de integridad,” declaró el Dr. James Michael Burkett, Presidente de Florida Technical College. “No hay duda que ha honrado la memoria del Sargento Sam Howard y del Oficial Matthew Baxter.”
La beca cubrió todos los costos asociados con la finalización de la licenciatura. El Teniente Berrio terminó sus estudios en Justicia Criminal en el 2021, pero debido a las restricciones del Covid-19 no pudo partipar de su graduación hasta el 7 de julio de 2023, un mes antes del sexto aniversario de la tragedia.
Esta es la primera ceremonia de graduación de Florida Technical College desde la pandemia. El Alcalde Jerry Demings encabezó la ceremonia como su orador inivitado, junto al Congresista Daren Soto y la Vicegobernadora Jeanette Nuñez, quienes ofrecieron un mensaje de graduación especial en video. Entre los asistentes a la graduación figuraron la Jefa del Departamento de Policía de Kissimmee, Betty Holland, la Vicealcaldesa de Kissimmee, Olga Castano, Tanisha Nunn-Gary, Presidenta de la Cámara de Comercio Afroamericana de Florida Central, Gaby Ortigoni, Presidenta de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Metro Orlando y Katia Medina, Vicepresidente de Prospera.
Sergeant Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter Scholarship Recipient Graduates with Honors from FTC
Orlando, FL – Education has been the vehicle to a better life for Omar Berrio. Recently, and after a 25-year law enforcement career, the now Kissimmee Police Department Lieutenant Omar Berrio had the opportunity to walk across the Amway Center stage to receive his Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree from Florida Technical College.
Lt. Berrio was awarded the Sergeant Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter Memorial Scholarship in February 2018, a scholarship created to honor Sergeant Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter, two Kissimmee Police Department officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2017 while out patrolling.
“Having the opportunity to honor them and that was the most important thing to me,” Berrio said. “Having known them personally, and professionally, gave me the opportunity to honor their legacy.”
His desire to do his best was exemplified by results achieved, Omar Berrio graduated Summa Cum Laude with 3.95 GPA.
Berrio also credits his professors at Florida Technical College with helping him navigate the higher education process to reach her educational goals.
Attending Florida Technical College helped Berrio get promoted to lieutenant. One of the requirements for the lieutenant position is to have an associate degree or 60 college credits, which Berrio was able to complete in 2021.
“Since receiving the scholarship Omar Berrio has been promoted to Lieutenant and continued to protect and serve the citizens of Kissimmee with the highest level of integrity,” stated Dr. James Michael Burkett, Florida Technical College President. “It is without question that he has honored the memories of Sergeant Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter.”
The scholarship covered all costs associated with the completion of a bachelor’s degree. Lt. Berrio completed his Criminal Justice degree in 2021, but due to Covid-19 restrictions couldn’t walk across the stage until July 7th, 2023, one month shy of the sixth anniversary of the tragedy.
This is Florida Technical College’s first commencement ceremony since the pandemic. Mayor Jerry Demings headlined as the commencement speaker of the graduation, along with Congressman Daren Soto and Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez who provided a special congratulatory video message. The graduation attendees included Kissimmee Police department Chief Betty Holland, Kissimmee Vice Mayor Olga Castano, Tanisha Nunn-Gary, President of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, Gaby Ortigoni, President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando and Katia Medina, VP of Prospera.
