Hemos llegado justo a la mitad de la campaña 2023 de la NFL: nueve partidos han pasado, nueve partidos faltan.
La mejor división
No hay ninguna duda de que todos los equipos de la AFC Norte pueden ser de playoffs. Y, aunque parezca increíble, de hecho si hoy terminara la temporada los cuatro lo serían, algo nunca antes visto. Tienen a Pittsburgh, que tienen a un mariscal terrible en los primeros tres cuartos pero casi perfecto en el último, el más importante, así como una defensiva de élite y su hito de nunca haber tenido una temporada perdedora con Mike Tomlin al mando (de 2007 para acá). Tienen a Cleveland, la defensiva #1 de la NFL. Tienen a Cincinnati con sus cuatro victorias seguidas, tres de ellas ante equipos de postemporada el año pasado: Seattle, San Francisco y Buffalo, así como el mariscal que mejor ha jugado en el último mes en Joe Burrow. Y tienen al líder momentáneo, Baltimore, para muchos el mejor equipo de la liga hoy por hoy. Otra defensiva de élite; un mariscal que, sin ser espectacular, está jugando sin errores; y han aplastado a dos equipos, en el papel, contendientes de la NFC como Detroit y Seattle, con marcador combinado de 75-9. Porque se enfrentarán entre sí es casi un hecho que al menos uno se quedará fuera (hoy le voy a los Cafés aunque los Acereros tampoco me llenan el ojo), pero genuinamente nunca habíamos visto una misma división donde todos los equipos sean así de buenos, todos contendientes, todos en playoffs.
Adición por substracción
A veces mejorar simplemente deshaciéndote de lo que te sobraba. Los Raiders aplastaron a los Gigantes y hasta fumaron puros tras el triunfo, y están a un juego de postemporada con un mariscal novato. ¿Qué cambió? Echaron, en la madrugada de Halloween, al GM David Ziegler y al HC Josh McDaniels. McDaniels es otro ejemplo más de los fracasos de los pupilos de Belichick. Bill O’Brien, Joe Judge, Matt Patricia, Brian Flores, y ahora Josh… por segunda ocasión. Ya había probado su suerte en 2009 en otro equipo de la misma división: Denver. Lo extraño es que no aprendió de sus errores. Entonces, decidió ligar su futuro a Tim Tebow. Ahora, en Las Vegas, decidió dejar ir a Derek Carr para traer… a Jimmy Garoppolo, un peor mariscal en todos los sentidos, y quien lideraba la liga en intercepciones hasta que Josh Allen lo superó el domingo. ¿Por qué decidir depender de mariscales tan mediocres? Josh fue conocido por ser el coordinador ofensivo de los Patriotas en sus últimos tres Super Bowls, pero tenía a Tom Brady lanzando pases y a Belichick encargándose de la defensiva. Tras ambos fracasotes, además de dejar parados “en el altar” a Indianapolis en 2018, absolutamente nadie se querrá acercar a Josh McDaniels (fuera de Nueva Inglaterra, a donde volverá más pronto que tarde).
¿Y en Florida?
Hoy Jacksonville y Miami lideran sus divisiones, pero quien ya se cayó fue Tampa Bay con sus cuatro derrotas al hilo. ¿Quiénes llegarán a playoffs?
The midseason point
We have reached the halfway point of the 2023 NFL campaign: nine games have passed, nine games remain.
The best division
There’s no doubt that every AFC North team can be playoff-bound. And, although it may seem incredible, in fact if the season ended today all four of them would be, something never seen before. There’s Pittsburgh, who have a terrible quarterback for the first three quarters but almost perfect in the last, the most important one, as well as an elite defense and their milestone of never having a losing season with Mike Tomlin at the helm (from 2007 to now). There’s Cleveland, the #1 defense in the NFL. There’s Cincinnati with their four straight Ws, three of them against playoff teams from last year: Seattle, San Francisco and Buffalo, as well as the quarterback who’s played the best in the last month in Joe Burrow. And there’s the momentary leader, Baltimore, for many the best team in the league today. Another elite defense; a quarterback who, without being spectacular, is playing flawlessly; and they’ve crushed two teams, on paper, NFC contenders in Detroit and Seattle, by a combined score of 75-9. Because they’ll face each other, it’s almost certain that at least one will be left out (today I’d bet the Browns although the Steelers don’t fill my eye either), but we’ve genuinely never seen the same division where all the teams are this good, all contenders, all in the playoffs.
Addition by subtraction
Sometimes you improve by simply getting rid of what you don’t need. The Raiders crushed the Giants and even smoked cigars after the win, and are one game away from the postseason with a rookie quarterback. What changed? GM David Ziegler and HC Josh McDaniels were fired on Halloween night. McDaniels is yet another example of the failures of Belichick’s pupils. Bill O’Brien, Joe Judge, Matt Patricia, Brian Flores, and now Josh… twice. He had already tried his luck in 2009 on another team in the same division: Denver. The strange thing is that he didn’t learn from his mistakes. Then, he decided to tie his future to Tim Tebow. Now, in Las Vegas, he decided to let Derek Carr go to bring in… Jimmy Garoppolo, a worse quarterback in every single way, and who led the league in interceptions until Josh Allen passed him on Sunday. Why decide to rely on such mediocre quarterbacks? Josh was known for being the Patriots’ offensive coordinator in their last three Super Bowls, but he had Tom Brady throwing passes and Belichick running the defense. After both failures, in addition to leaving Indianapolis “at the altar” in 2018, absolutely no one will want to get close to Josh McDaniels (outside of New England, where he’ll return sooner rather than later).
And in Florida?
Today Jacksonville and Miami lead their divisions, but the one who’s falling is Tampa Bay with four losses in a row. Who’ll make it to the playoffs?
